Self-discipline or self-flagellation?

As doctors we undergo more formal training than the vast majority of the population. Obviously, that’s good in many ways – there is a lot to learn!

However, some of that training is training to override: override feelings of emotional distress at a patient’s suffering, override discomfort at medical interventions that may feel heavy handed, override the distress signals of our own mind, body or soul.

This can be simply, I must finish this before I go to the loo, drink or eat.

It can be – I must get through this inbox even though I can’t see properly anymore.

It may be – this patient needs me right now, despite the overwhelming menstrual cramps I’m experiencing.

It may be – my emotional body is screaming at me that my child needs attention, but I need to finish these referrals.

Medics are often very self-disciplined. I’m a complete advocate for self-discipline, resilience and determination and there are times when we must just push through. But that pushing through must always be balanced by a period of rest and reflexion. If we keep pushing through relentlessly eventually our bodies will mutiny (see In Defence of the Realm, Dr Gabriella Day, New Generation Publishing, 2025)

Self-discipline ought not to morph into self-flagellation.

But too often it does. Punishing ourselves for what exactly? Choosing a healing profession?!

What are we teaching our patients and the population about self-care when we beat ourselves in this fashion?

Our bodies tell us when they are suffering. Sadly, too often we choose to numb ourselves to this critical information, with stimulants, drugs, online content and other pathological compensations.

Physician heal thy self…

How can we start to honour ourselves a little more?

Is it possible if we stop driving ourselves relentlessly, that rather than coming to a grinding halt, we might find a new flow and ease, that would benefit ourselves, our families and our patients?

Can you trust that nature, in its infinite wisdom knows better than the driving force of our own self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy?

Do you think, perhaps, that you might even have been perfectly designed for your role here on Earth and not actually be required to flog yourself to death in order to achieve it???

At Three Realms Health, we have faith in your body, mind and soul and its ability to fulfil its role, even if you don’t! See if we can inspire you!

PS As I write I am drinking ginger tea, which is a warming herb perfect for heading into the winter months. Our soil is trying to nourish us. Let’s accept its offerings.

Admittedly, I am drinking it from a cup that says, “I am sick when I do look on thee.”
